Our Story

From Extractives to Energy Transition: A Decade of Civic Action for Energy Justice

The Energy Governance Platform (EGP) is a coalition of civil society organisations working to make Africa’s energy future just, inclusive, and sustainable.

Founded in 2013 as the Kenya Civil Society Platform on Oil and Gas (KCSPOG), our journey began with a simple belief — that Kenya’s natural resources should be managed for the benefit of its people, not a privileged few.

A decade later, we have evolved from focusing on extractives to shaping conversations on the energy transition — ensuring that Africa’s shift toward renewables protects livelihoods, strengthens governance, and leaves no one behind. Our rebrand to EGP reflects this transformation and our expanded role in advancing energy justice across the continent.

The Kenya Civil Society Platform on Oil and Gas (KCSPOG) is established to promote accountability, transparency, and citizen participation in Kenya’s emerging extractives sector. Laying the Foundation for Extractives Governance

KCSPOG plays a pivotal role in shaping public dialogue and policy reform around Kenya’s oil and gas discoveries. Through advocacy and research, the Platform amplifies community voices, influences key national legislation, and builds the capacity of civil society actors to engage in extractive governance.

Adapting to Change and Expanding the Lens

As global and national conversations shift toward sustainable energy transition, KCSPOG begins to reassess its focus. The Platform recognises the need to address not just extractives, but the wider energy ecosystem — from fossil fuels to renewables and climate justice.

Rebirth as the Energy Governance Platform (EGP)

Informed by its 2022–2025 Strategic Plan, KCSPOG transitions into the Energy Governance Platform (EGP). This rebrand reflects a broader mission: to promote equity, sustainability, and accountability across Kenya’s entire energy sector — oil, gas, renewables, and beyond. EGP continues to champion citizen participation, policy coherence, and inclusive development in the pursuit of a just energy transition.
